Tsubaki's Zip Chain Actuator Advances High-Speed Linear Motion in Industries

As manufacturers push for faster cycle times and more compact automation layouts, conventional lifting technologies such as hydraulic cylinders and screw driven actuators are increasingly being re-evaluated. Tsubaki's Zip Chain Actuator offers a distinct alternative, combining high-speed operation, precise positioning, and a space-saving design suited to modern production environments. 

At the heart of the system is a dual-chain interlocking mechanism. Two specially engineered chains engage in a zipper-like fashion to form a rigid column capable of transmitting both compressive and tensile forces. Unlike traditional systems that rely on long screws or extended cylinders, the unused chain is stored compactly within a compact actuator housing. This enables long stroke lengths without increasing the overall installation height, making the system particularly effective in space-constrained applications. 

Performance, precision, and flexibility 
The actuator uses a sprocket-driven system to convert rotary motion into linear thrust. As the chains interlock during operation, they create a stable column structure that resists buckling and ensures consistent motion accuracy. This allows smooth push–pull movement across extended travel distances, supporting both lifting and positioning applications. 

With linear speeds ranging from 500mm/s upto 1,000 mm/s, it significantly outperforms conventional screw-driven systems, making it ideal for high-frequency operations where throughput is critical. When integrated with servo motors, it enables precise multi position stopping, supporting synchronized movement in automated assembly lines and transfer systems. 

The actuator is scalable in terms of load handling. Standard configurations support thrust loads ranging from 33kg to 204kg for workstation applications, while larger systems can generate high thrust loads for handling heavy components of upto 3,900kg like automotive assemblies or palletized materials. Customised double actuator configurations can offer even higher thrust loads based upon application needs. Stroke lengths extending from 300mm to 5,000mm enhances its adaptability across industrial setups. 

Efficiency and reliability in operation 
Energy efficiency is a key advantage of the Zip Chain Actuator, which requires only one fourteenth of the power consumed by a hydraulic cylinder.. By eliminating the need for hydraulic circuits or compressed air, it reduces energy consumption and avoids issues such as leakage and pressure losses. Brake motor integration allows loads to be held in position without continuous power input, contributing to lower operating costs. 

The chain-based mechanism is engineered for durability and high-cycle operation, with minimal elongation and wear over time. Its modular construction simplifies inspection and maintenance, helping reduce downtime in demanding production environments. 

Compact design for modern automation 
A defining feature of the Zip Chain Actuator is its compact form factor. The ability to store the chain within the actuator body allows for a significantly reduced footprint compared to traditional lifting systems. This makes it well suited for installations where space is limited. 

Additionally, the actuator can be mounted in vertical, horizontal, or inverted orientations, offering flexibility for integration into conveyor systems, automated transfer units, and ergonomic lifting platforms.  

With its combination of high-speed operation, precision positioning, energy efficiency, and scalable load capacity, the Zip Chain Actuator provides manufacturers with a modern alternative to traditional lift technologies. It is positioned as a reliable, adaptable solution for industries seeking improved productivity, safer operations, and long-term cost optimisation.
