Today, safety is not just a choice but a necessity: Manish Poudwal

Safety in industrial environments is a top priority. Subtronics, a leading manufacturer of gas detection systems and other safety equipment, is delivering innovative solutions to address these concerns. In this interview with Rakesh Rao, Manish Poudwal, Chairman & Managing Director, Subtronics (India) Pvt Ltd, explains trends in industrial safety and the role played by his company in making workplaces safer.

How is Subtronics helping industries to ensure safety?
Ensuring safety within industrial environments is paramount, and at Subtronics, we understand the critical importance of reliable equipment. We specialise in gas detection systems and breath alcohol analysers. Our products and solutions are used across industries such as chemicals & petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, battery charging rooms, metals & mines, power plants, cement, data centers, etc.

In India, certain regulatory and statutory bodies mandate specific approvals for industries. For example, regulatory bodies such as the Petroleum Explosives and Safety Organisation (PESO) enforce stringent requirements in India, making it imperative for certain clients to adhere to approved safety standards. We are proud to be PESO approved.

Our coverage begins right from the gate, where individuals, including truck drivers, undergo breath analysis for alcohol, addressing concerns related to drink and drive cases. It extends throughout the entire planning process, including gauges and the detection of toxic and combustible gases. In fact, our gas detection systems are designed to detect more than 200 different gases, including challenging ones, leaving no stone unturned in safeguarding both manpower and premises. In an era where safety is non-negotiable, clients recognise the value of such investments and understand that safety is not just a choice but a necessity.

How important is the role of government in ensuring adherence to high safety standards?
The government has played a pivotal role in making workplaces safer by implementing stringent quality and safety norms. The government is also enforcing implementation of high standards of safety and quality in manufacturing processes to make Indian industries globally competitive. Regulatory authorities such as the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conduct audits of facilities to ensure compliance with established norms. Subtronics adheres to all quality standards, such as BIS, PESO, ATEX, etc from sourcing raw materials to the final dispatch of our products.

In today's marketplace, buyers are well-informed and prioritise products that meet regulatory standards. Therefore, having the necessary approvals and certifications is crucial for maintaining trust and credibility. To manage these certifications, we have dedicated teams tasked with ensuring compliance at every stage.

What are the emerging trends in the gas detection system?
The latest trend is the integration of Industry 4.0 principles. Previously, gas sensing systems were designed to detect specific gases, such as ethylene oxide (EO), presenting a challenge in terms of sensor specificity. However, advancements in technology have enabled the development of instruments tailored to detect particular gases with high precision.

Nowadays, the focus has shifted towards Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), where sensors and devices are interconnected to provide real-time monitoring and control. We are embracing this trend by developing products that adhere to Industry 4.0 standards. Soon, we will launch an IoT platform that allows users to monitor their entire plant's status from anywhere in the world using a mobile device, iPad, or desktop.

There is also a growing demand for portable gas monitors that are compact and lightweight. We are addressing this demand by developing India's smallest and slimmest gas detector, making it convenient for users to carry it in their pockets. Furthermore, we are introducing multi-gas detectors that can simultaneously detect multiple gases on a single screen, a feature previously unavailable in Indian-manufactured devices.

What are your growth plans?
Looking ahead, our growth plans centre around expanding our export market and capitalising on the growing demand for safety equipment worldwide. By creating a new division dedicated to export operations, we wish to capitalise on emerging opportunities and drive the future of industrial safety forward.
