Pune-based Sopan Group, in collaboration with VOC Port Authority (VOCPA), has commenced construction of India’s first Green Methanol Bunkering and Refuelling Facility, a pioneering step in sustainable maritime infrastructure. The landmark project was inaugurated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, representing a significant advancement towards decarbonising Indian ports and supporting the nation’s clean energy transition. This facility aligns with India’s Net Zero goals and Maritime India Vision 2030, promoting adoption of clean fuels and sustainable port development.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone on 5 September 2025 at VO Chidambaranar Port Authority (formerly Tuticorin Port Trust) for India’s first pilot-scale port decarbonisation project focusing on Green Methanol as a shipping fuel. The project includes development of a 750 m³ Green Methanol Bunkering and Refuelling Terminal.

Susanta Purohit, Chairperson of VOCPA, said, “The Government of India has set a vision to achieve Net Zero by 2070. In line with this, VOC Port is advancing its Green Port mission, having already completed a pilot hydrogen project. Establishing India’s first Green Methanol Bunkering and Refuelling facility is another bold step, and we are pleased to partner with SOPAN Group, a proven leader in Green Energy and EPC Projects.”

Aniruddha Kadvekar, Director of SOPAN, said, “Today, SOPAN is not just constructing a facility; we are laying the foundation for India’s green maritime future. By creating the nation’s first Green Methanol Bunkering Hub at VOC Port Tuticorin, we will enable up to 95 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions from ships and position India as a leader in alternative fuels. This flagship project reflects our ‘Make in India’ capabilities and a transformative leap towards Net Zero, making Indian ports a preferred global choice for sustainable shipping. We thank VOCPA and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for their trust in this vision.”
