Security seals: Simple tools for solving serious problems in modern logistics

In today’s fast-moving logistics and supply chain world, the threats of tampering, pilferage, and unauthorised access haven’t gone away—they’ve just gotten smarter. But here’s the good news: protecting goods in transit doesn’t have to involve complicated, expensive tech. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the most effective. That’s where security seals come in.

Why seals still matter
Despite advances in tracking and surveillance, many companies overlook a basic but powerful line of defence: tamper-evident sealing. Security seals act as clear indicators of interference. If a seal is broken, it sends a message—loud and clear—that something’s wrong.

Whether you're shipping raw materials, finished goods, or high-value products across the country or overseas, seals create an undeniable, low-cost barrier that reinforces trust in your supply chain.

While selecting a seal consider commodity value, risk zones, number of transit points, and ease of handling at destination.

What makes a good seal?
At Safcon, we have spent over a decade refining our seal designs to meet today’s logistics challenges. Here’s what industry buyers look for now:
  • Ease of use: No tools needed to apply or remove in many cases.
  • Clear identification: Company branding, unique serial numbers and barcoding
  • Tamper evidence: Once broken, seals can't be reused or resealed.
  • Versatility: Suitable for containers, tankers, truck tarpaulins truck doors, product packages, drums and barrels, warehouses, doors, plant valves and many other applications.
Safcon’s most popular safety seal options are:
  • Saflok Plastic Container Seals: Affordable, toolless and ideal for local delivery trucks and warehouses.
  • Bolt container seals: Heavy-duty metal seals that require bolt cutters for removal - perfect for containers for domestic and international shipments.
  • Cable seals: Flexible, weather-resistant, and color-coded—great for chemical, food and pharma logistics.
  • Ball-Lok & pull-tight seals: Quick locking, tamper-evident and widely used in bulk tankers, truck tarpaulins, tote boxes, and distribution hubs.

Each seal is designed for a specific challenge—whether it’s theft deterrence, route visibility, or compliance.

Beyond the seal: Best practices every logistics team should follow
Let’s face it - no matter how secure the seal is, it’s only as effective as your process. Here’s what will work in 2025:

Seal control & tracking: Order seals only from authorised locations (like HQ); maintain separate logs for outbound and inbound seal records; and always apply seals in the presence of supervisors or shipping reps.

Application do’s: Seal both rear and side doors; match the seal strength with shipment risk (e.g., bolt seal for domestic and international, plastic for intra-city); and check every seal before use—look for signs of tampering or reuse.

What if a seal is broken mid-route?
Document everything: Who broke it? Why? When? What was the replacement? Who witnessed it?

This isn’t about bureaucracy—it’s about protecting your cargo, reputation, and bottom line.

Security isn't one size fits all
Just like no two shipments are alike, seal solutions must be tailored. While selecting a seal consider commodity value, risk zones, number of transit points, and ease of handling at destination.

We also recommend colour-coded seals for warehouses and terminals to prevent mix-ups and reduce the risk of unauthorised reuse. The use of random colours periodically reduces the chance of use of duplicate fake seal for theft and adulteration.

Final thought: Choose smart, not just cheap
The cheapest seal may not offer the security your cargo deserves. And investing in the wrong seal is no better than using none. Work with trusted manufacturers, know your cargo, and set a process and stick to it.

Because when something goes missing, it’s not just the product that’s lost—it’s trust.

Safcon also specialised in security seals for utilities – electric, gas, water and heat and offers a vide range of innovative solutions for utility meters.
