Northvolt unveils sodium-ion battery, breaking China's EV battery stranglehold

In a groundbreaking development poised to break China's monopoly on the global electric vehicle (EV) battery supply, Northvolt, Sweden's leading electric battery manufacturer, has introduced an innovative sodium-ion battery. Diverging from traditional batteries, Northvolt's pioneering sodium-ion battery eliminates the reliance on lithium, nickel, graphite, and cobalt, presenting a more sustainable and cost-efficient solution.

With an impressive energy density surpassing 160 watt-hours per kilogram, the battery's initial application is targeted at electricity storage plants. However, it holds great promise for future integration into electric vehicles, including two-wheeled scooters.

Patrik Andreasson, Northvolt's Vice President of Strategy and Sustainability, underscored the profound significance of this breakthrough, stating, "While sodium-ion technology is not entirely new, we believe this is the first product entirely devoid of critical raw materials. It marks a fundamental breakthrough in battery technology."
