Mercedes-Benz India has reached a historic production milestone with the roll-out of its 200,000th locally manufactured vehicle from its Chakan facility in Pune. The landmark car, an EQS SUV, was unveiled by Dr Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, alongside Santosh Iyer, MD & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

This achievement highlights India’s growing significance as a strategic manufacturing base for the German luxury automaker. The Chakan plant, which now produces both ICE and EV models under one roof, stands out for its flexible, agile, and sustainable production capabilities.

The entire facility has been powered by 100% green energy since 2022, aligning with Mercedes-Benz’s global sustainability goals.

Accelerated growth trajectory:
First 50,000 cars: Took 19 years (1995–2014)
Next 100,000 units: Achieved in 9 years (2015–2023)
Most recent 50,000: Manufactured in just 2 years and 3 months, reflecting surging demand

Pioneering local production:
India was the first market outside Germany to locally manufacture a Mercedes-Maybach (S500) in 2015
Began local EV production with the EQS 580 Sedan in 2022, followed by the EQS 580 SUV in 2024
Offers the widest range of locally manufactured luxury cars in India with 11 models

Investment & commitment:
Mercedes-Benz India has invested Rs 30 billion in its operations—the highest by any luxury carmaker in the country—including a recent Rs 2 billion investment in 2024 to support EV production and capacity expansion.

Dr Jörg Burzer emphasised the plant's global relevance, “This milestone reaffirms India’s role as a vital part of Mercedes-Benz’s sustainable and agile production network. The Chakan facility's ability to flexibly produce both ICE and EVs underlines its technical excellence and responsiveness to market needs.”

Santosh Iyer added,“Our production facility remains the backbone of our success in India. We are committed to investing further to meet growing demand and continue offering world-class luxury products tailored to Indian consumers.”

Nationwide reach:
Supporting its robust production capabilities, Mercedes-Benz also boasts India’s largest luxury retail network, with over 100 touchpoints across 50 cities, ensuring premium experiences and service accessibility nationwide.

This production milestone strengthens Mercedes-Benz’s “Made in India, for India” philosophy—delivering global quality while catering to local luxury preferences.
