Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on August 26, 2025, inaugurated two landmark initiatives at Suzuki Motor’s Hansalpur plant in Ahmedabad, marking significant steps in India’s journey towards becoming a global hub for green mobility while reinforcing the vision of Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

A key highlight was the launch and flag-off of the “e-Vitara”, Suzuki’s first global strategic Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV). Manufactured in India, these BEVs will be exported to over 100 countries, including advanced markets such as Europe and Japan. With this milestone, India assumes the role of Suzuki’s global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated the next phase of India’s battery ecosystem with the commencement of local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Gujarat—a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki. This initiative is set to strengthen domestic manufacturing and accelerate clean energy innovation, with over 80 percent of the battery value chain now being produced within India.

Japanese car maker to invest $8 bn in India
Japan’s Suzuki Motor chairman Toshihiro Suzuki announced that the company will invest ?700 billion ($8 billion) in India over the next five to six years. The investment will focus on increasing production capacity, introducing new models, and safeguarding Maruti Suzuki’s market share in the world’s third-largest car market. Suzuki stressed that India remains the company’s largest market by sales and revenue. He also noted that Maruti’s plant in Gujarat is poised to become one of the world’s largest automobile manufacturing hubs with a planned annual capacity of one million units.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, inaugurating Maruti Suzuki’s lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad, described the development as a “new chapter” in India’s ‘Make in India’ journey and a “big leap” towards ‘Make for the World.’ He highlighted that electric vehicles manufactured in India will now be exported to 100 countries, marking a milestone in India’s emergence as a global automotive hub. Modi also underlined that hybrid battery electrolyte manufacturing has commenced in India, further strengthening domestic capabilities in advanced mobility solutions.

The Prime Minister added that the occasion also deepens the India-Japan partnership, which he described as a symbol of strength and global confidence in India. Recalling his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2012, Modi said that the foundation of this success was laid when land was allotted to Suzuki for its Hansalpur plant. He compared Maruti’s 13-year journey in Gujarat to a teenager entering a new phase of growth, with greater ambition and potential to “spread new wings.”

Modi emphasised that companies like Maruti Suzuki have become brand ambassadors of ‘Make in India,’ with electric vehicles bearing the “Made in India” label set to reach dozens of countries. He said this marks not only an industrial milestone but also a step forward in India’s global positioning as a manufacturing and innovation hub.
