Laser technology is fundamentally transforming manufacturing: Hrishikesh Sawant

C and C Laser Engineering Pvt Ltd (CnC Laser) has rapidly positioned itself as a specialised provider of advanced laser systems and services, catering to diverse industrial applications requiring precision and flexibility. The company was in August 2019 by Hrishikesh Sawant, who brings over three decades of experience in laser technologies. In this interview, Hrishikesh Sawant, Director, C and C Laser Engineering Pvt Ltd, explains how the company is addressing India’s growing demand for high-end laser solutions with a strong focus on cleanroom servicing, application development and Industry 4.0 integration.

Could you outline C and C Laser Engineering’s journey since its inception in 2019, including its core offerings and the key industries it serves today?
The company was founded with a clear mission: to create a world-class cleanroom laser servicing facility in India, provide comprehensive servicing for nano-, pico- and femtosecond lasers, and develop a best-in-class laser application job-shop to support Indian industry.

The company focuses on delivering state-of-the-art laser-based solutions, including laser marking, engraving, cutting, micro-machining and welding systems. We supply lasers and laser-based systems across a wide wavelength range—CO? (10.6 ?m), IR (1.06 ?m), green (532 nm), UV (355 nm) and DUV (266 nm)—with pulse widths ranging from nanosecond to femtosecond. Our solutions cater to industries such as medical devices, jewellery, tools, textiles, fashion, diamonds, glass, electronics, research institutes and more.

How has demand evolved across applications such as laser marking, engraving, cutting, micro-machining and welding, and which industries are currently seeing the strongest traction?
Demand for laser marking, engraving and allied applications has grown significantly in recent years, driven by the need for greater precision, traceability and aesthetic quality. Industries are increasingly seeking capabilities such as micro-marking, 3D engraving, high-contrast marking, micro-welding and micro-processing.

A notable example is the packaging sector, where plastic bottles used for storage now require high-contrast QR code marking for traceability. This requirement has been successfully addressed using our UV laser marking machines, demonstrating strong traction in packaging, electronics, medical and consumer goods industries.

In what ways is laser technology reshaping manufacturing processes in terms of precision, productivity and flexibility when compared with conventional methods?
Laser technology is fundamentally transforming manufacturing by shifting processes from mechanical, contact-based methods to non-contact, light-based and software-driven operations. Compared with conventional techniques such as mechanical shearing, CNC machining or plasma cutting, lasers offer far higher precision, faster processing speeds and greater design flexibility.

This transition reduces material wastage, minimises tool wear, and enables the production of complex, high-performance components that are difficult or impossible to achieve through traditional methods.

With rising expectations around accuracy, turnaround time and automation, what strategies have C and C Laser Engineering adopted to deliver reliable, high-end solutions?
We focus on delivering high-end laser solutions by integrating Industry 4.0 technologies such as IoT-enabled monitoring and data analytics for real-time performance tracking. Advanced components, including fibre lasers and precision optics, are deployed to ensure consistency and accuracy.

Additionally, we streamline supply chains, promote smart factory automation and strengthen after-sales support through localised service and repair centres. These measures help reduce downtime, improve turnaround time and ensure high system reliability.

As an authorised service provider for global laser solution companies, how does this positioning strengthen your technical capabilities and customer support ecosystem in India?
Being an authorised service provider gives us direct access to advanced technologies from global principals, including AI-enabled welding systems with real-time weld pool monitoring and predictive maintenance features. This association enhances our technical expertise and enables faster resolution of complex service requirements.

It also allows us to develop specialised solutions for high-growth sectors in India, such as electric vehicle battery welding and semiconductor packaging, both of which are expected to see strong demand growth through 2026.

What are the key challenges Indian manufacturers face in adopting advanced laser technologies, and how can solution providers help bridge these gaps?
Indian manufacturers face several challenges when adopting advanced laser technologies, including high upfront capital costs, longer return-on-investment cycles and a shortage of skilled manpower. These issues are particularly acute for small and medium enterprises.

Solution providers can help bridge these gaps by offering flexible business models, localised technical expertise, training programmes and application support. Addressing skill shortages in optics, materials science and advanced programming is also critical to accelerating adoption.

Have you introduced any new laser systems or application solutions recently? What performance advantages do they offer?
We have recently introduced a 3D laser engraving system using a 2D galvo head, capable of processing materials such as stainless steel, mild steel, brass, silver, gold, glass and wood. In addition, we launched a 3D laser inscription system for internal engraving within glass crystals.

These state-of-the-art systems address the growing needs of the jewellery, fashion, art and craft industries, offering high precision, flexibility and superior aesthetic outcomes.

What are your growth plans for the company over the next few years?
C and C Laser Engineering plans to establish a state-of-the-art laser manufacturing and repair centre in India. This facility will manufacture lasers, provide comprehensive servicing for in-house products and support servicing requirements for lasers manufactured by other companies.

We already operate a fully equipped application laboratory featuring IR, green, UV and CO? lasers, supporting applications such as laser marking, engraving, internal marking, micro-machining, cutting and welding. This capability will form the foundation for our next phase of growth.
