India's Semiconductor industry aims to create 1.2 million jobs

India is embarking on a mission to solidify its position as a prominent semiconductor manufacturing hub, and in pursuit of this goal, it anticipates the creation of an astonishing 1.2 million jobs within the sector. Jaya Jagadish, the Country Head of AMD India and Chairperson of the Semicon Talent Building Committee (TBC), has shed light on the burgeoning employment prospects within the semiconductor industry.
The demand for talent within this industry is multifaceted, spanning roles such as engineers, operators, technicians, and more. During a media interaction, Jaya Jagadish expounded on the future prospects of the semiconductor sector in India, revealing that a comprehensive analysis of year-on-year demand and growth across various sectors pointed to a cumulative need for approximately 1.2 million skilled professionals within the country.
Notably, the chip design sector is poised to play a pivotal role, necessitating the recruitment of 275,000 individuals with diverse educational backgrounds, including undergraduates, diploma holders, master's graduates, Ph.D. scholars, and postdoctoral researchers. Jagadish emphasised, "Talent constitutes the cornerstone of the industry, and India possesses a unique advantage with its abundant talent pool, bolstered by the annual graduation of over half a million engineering students."
Jagadish underscored the remarkable evolution of the chip design sector in India, which began approximately two decades ago. Today, every major player in the semiconductor industry has established a design centre in the country, significantly contributing to the sector's growth. However, the manufacturing facet, while promising, demands substantial capital investment alongside a skilled workforce. Various incentives have been introduced to expedite this growth trajectory.
Despite the availability of ample talent, the industry faces a challenge concerning the readiness of its workforce. Jagadish identified a skills gap and stressed the importance of implementing incentives and initiatives to bridge this divide. One noteworthy initiative involves curriculum changes and the introduction of coursework in approximately 300 engineering colleges, facilitated by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) based on TBC recommendations.
While these initiatives form part of long-term strategies, short-term efforts are also in progress. Reskilling and upskilling programs are being rolled out to enhance the employability of the talent pool. Furthermore, students are being equipped with practical experiences to better prepare them for the industry's demands.
In conclusion, Jagadish emphasised the necessity of collaboration among industry, academia, and government to cultivate a robust talent landscape. Currently, all stakeholders are actively engaged in collective efforts to nurture and harness India's immense potential in the semiconductor sector. The future of the industry appears promising, with abundant opportunities for skilled individuals to contribute to its growth and success.
