IIT Delhi develops cost-effective solar cell technology

A research team at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, led by Prof Trilok Singh from the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, has achieved a significant breakthrough in solar cell technology, promising to reduce production costs and simplify manufacturing processes.

The team’s work focuses on Perovskite solar cells and was recently published in the SMALL journal. Traditionally, manufacturing these cells requires complex and costly anti-solvent techniques. However, the IIT Delhi researchers have developed a new method to produce Perovskite cells under regular air conditions, eliminating the need for these intricate processes. This innovation could make production more economical and scalable, paving the way for widespread adoption in the solar energy sector.

A key element in this achievement is the use of guanidine sulfate salt as a stabilizing agent, which addresses common issues related to interfacial stresses and defects, enhancing both performance and durability. As a result, the newly developed Perovskite cells demonstrated significant improvements in efficiency and stability.

Notably, the solar cells retained 87% of their initial efficiency after 2,000 hours of operation, showcasing their potential for long-term use.

This breakthrough offers a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional silicon-based solar cells, reducing production complexities and making solar energy more accessible. It aligns with India’s efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions and has the potential to accelerate global adoption of affordable solar power.
