India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) will launch its landmark white paper, Vision 2047: India’s Roadmap for a Self-Reliant Battery Ecosystem (Developing India’s Domestic Content Trajectory across the Battery Value Chain), at the 5th India Battery Manufacturing & Supply Chain Summit (IBMSCS) 2026, to be held in Hyderabad from 5–6 February 2025.

The white paper presents a comprehensive vision to foster a robust, integrated domestic battery value chain and advance India’s self-reliance in energy storage technologies.

The report outlines a strategic blueprint for building a competitive domestic battery ecosystem, with the objective of strengthening India’s energy independence and positioning the country as a global leader in energy storage technologies.

Despite proactive initiatives by ministries including Heavy Industries, Power, New & Renewable Energy, Mines, Commerce and Finance, the sector continues to call for a holistic National Battery Strategy to harmonise interventions and accelerate domestic manufacturing.

The Vision 2047 white paper, developed with inputs from the India Battery Manufacturing and Supply Chain Council (IBMSCC) and the India Recycling and Reuse Council (IRRC), offers actionable recommendations for stakeholders across the value chain.

IBMSCS 2026 will convene more than 600 delegates, over 50 industry leaders and 250+ companies, including Attero, Rubamin, Toshiba and Luminous, along with institutions such as the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET) and the Indian Institute of Science.

The summit will also see participation from China, Japan, Korea, Finland, Australia, Germany and the USA to address critical gaps and collaborate on solutions across the advanced chemistry cell (ACC) value chain. Together, the summit and the white paper aim to serve as catalysts for a globally competitive, self-reliant battery ecosystem as India advances towards Vision 2047.

Debmalya Sen, President, IESA, said, ‘Vision 2047 is a timely, industry-driven roadmap that underscores the need for parallel development across upstream components, mineral refining, and downstream pack assembly, system integration and recycling. By aligning policy, investment and R&D with industry needs, India can build a resilient and sustainable battery ecosystem that supports energy security and creates high-value green jobs.’

Demand for advanced chemistry cells and energy storage systems is accelerating, driven by rapid electric vehicle adoption, grid-scale renewable integration and growing commercial and industrial uptake of behind-the-meter systems. Large-scale deployment is being supported by initiatives such as Round-the-Clock (RTC) and Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) tenders from SECI, NTPC and state utilities, as well as projects backed by Viability Gap Funding (VGF) and the Power System Development Fund (PSDF). These drivers are enabling higher renewable penetration, grid flexibility and reliability, while opening new opportunities for domestic manufacturers, system integrators and value chain participants.

Vinayak Walimbe, Managing Director, Customized Energy Solutions, said, ‘The summit and white paper launch come at a defining moment, with India’s battery market poised for exponential growth. A coordinated industry–government approach to supply chain localisation, gigafactory deployment and recycling infrastructure will enable India to leapfrog global competitors and achieve true self-reliance.’

On the supply side, India has made steady progress in cell and pack manufacturing, supported by the ACC Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme and private sector investments. Several gigafactories have been announced across key states, signalling growing market confidence and industrial maturity. Component localisation for cathodes, anodes, electrolytes and separators is gaining momentum through R&D collaboration and technology partnerships. However, the global concentration of the battery supply chain, particularly in China, underscores the need for coordinated policy and fiscal incentives to deepen domestic value addition in India.
