Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is set to revolutionise its vehicle lineup by adopting locally manufactured Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries from Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M). Starting in the fourth quarter of the 2024-2025 fiscal year, HMIL will become the first Indian automaker to integrate this advanced domestic technology, underscoring its commitment to local sourcing and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. This partnership not only enhances HMIL's localisation efforts but also marks a significant milestone for the Indian manufacturing sector.

This collaboration highlights HMIL's dedication to localisation and innovation. The AGM batteries developed by ARE&M have demonstrated superior durability and efficiency through rigorous testing. Compared to traditional batteries, AGM technology is better suited for modern vehicles, helping HMIL meet stringent emission standards and support future mobility solutions.

Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Chief Manufacturing Officer, HMIL, stated, “At Hyundai Motor India Limited, adopting innovative technology to exceed the ever-evolving customer expectations has been our forte. HMIL is poised to become the first auto OEM in India to introduce indigenously manufactured AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery technology in its products, made by Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited. Besides, working with an Indian company for this world-class technology is a true testament to HMIL’s commitment towards localisation, well aligned with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.”

The AMARON AGM batteries, manufactured by ARE&M, have shown remarkable improvements in durability, outperforming conventional CMF batteries by approximately 150%. With a broader operational temperature range and extended lifespan, these batteries are specifically designed to handle India's diverse and demanding driving conditions.

Harshavardhana Gourineni, Executive Director, Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to be a part of Hyundai Motor India Limited’s journey of redefining future mobility. This is a significant step in AMARON’s mission to deliver world-class energy solutions that meet the evolving demands of Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). These batteries are designed to meet stringent Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms like India’s BS6 Phase 2 standards.”

The Made-in-India AGM batteries offer several cutting-edge features, including rapid charging, extended lifespan, low self-discharge, reduced maintenance, and high energy efficiency. These attributes make them ideal for vehicles equipped with Idle Stop and Go (ISG) systems, ensuring smoother starts and superior energy management to meet the growing electrical demands of modern cars.
By producing these batteries domestically, the partnership not only stimulates local job creation and economic growth but also reduces costs and environmental impacts by minimising reliance on imports. Extensive testing conducted at Hyundai Motor Company’s global R&D centre in Namyang, South Korea, has validated the performance and compliance of AGM batteries with Indian emission standards.

The integration of AGM battery technology will enable HMIL to roll out next-generation vehicles tailored for the Indian market. These vehicles promise improved performance, enhanced range, and reduced emissions, contributing to a more sustainable automotive ecosystem.

HMIL’s localisation efforts continue to strengthen, supported by a dedicated team that collaborates with over 194 vendors for more than 1,238 components at its Chennai facility. This localisation drive will also extend to HMIL's upcoming plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, further cementing its leadership in domestic manufacturing and sourcing.
