Adopting energy-efficient measures, renewable energy solutions, and advanced technologies could save Rs 370 million annually in energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,36,581 tonnes across 66 units in seven key Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) clusters, according to a study. The study was conducted by the Centre for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP). It focused on decarbonisation in the MSME sector, which refers to the reduction or elimination of carbon dioxide emissions.
Despite the potential cost and CO2 reduction benefits, the study indicated that an initial investment of Rs 900 million would be required across these clusters. The study covered units in Alathur, Asansol-Chirkunda, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Coimbatore, Ludhiana, and Tiruppur. It included energy and emission-intensive sectors such as pharmaceuticals, refractories, aluminium die-casting, bakeries, and textiles units in these clusters.
