AWSi showcases office-on-wheel at Hannover Messe 2025

At Hannover Messe 2025 (HM2025) in Germany, the August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute (AWSi) - a non-profit research institute dedicated to digital transformation and innovation – presented groundbreaking innovations at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), green technologies, and digital transformation. Among the highlights was a unique Indo-German collaboration involving AI-powered insect farming in Hyderabad, which promises to enhance India’s role in the global insect export market.

Urs Liebau and Christian Bennoit, Digitalisation Professionals of AWSi, showcased their institute’s latest developments, including a futuristic Office-on-Wheel concept and their involvement in India-centric sustainability projects. AWSi is known for converting research into practical applications for businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises.

Liebau, who specialises in green technologies, detailed his work with a Hyderabad-based insect farming company, Arthro Biotech. In collaboration with the company, AWSi developed AI-driven tools to optimise insect farming operations. “One of the most important things for insect farmers is to accurately count the insects. We used AI technologies to automate and improve this process,” Liebau explained.

The objective was not only to streamline operations but also to enable better scalability and quality control, making the produce viable for export to European markets. “It’s a great example of how India and Germany can collaborate, combining technical innovation with practical applications in agriculture,” he noted. Liebau acknowledged that while the insect products from India are still in development stages, optimised production will lead to cost reductions and enhance India’s competitiveness, especially in comparison to markets like China.

He emphasised that such partnerships could unlock numerous possibilities across sectors. “Digitalisation doesn’t always need expensive or radical solutions. Sometimes, even simple tools can solve very specific problems,” he added. Liebau also revealed that other AI-based applications are being explored in the fields of biodiversity and environmental monitoring. One project involved an audio AI expert, originally working on noise reduction in aircraft, who later contributed to measuring biodiversity by tracking bee activity to help beekeepers manage threats from invasive hornets.

Highlighting another ambitious project, Christian Bennoit introduced visitors to the institute’s Office-on-Wheel, a solar-powered, autonomous concept car designed to serve as a fully equipped mobile workspace. Developed in partnership with a solar panel company and automotive tuner Wolf Hartke, the project aims to address how time spent in autonomous vehicles can be made productive.

“This car is designed to give you all the comforts of a stationary office, stable internet via Starlink or 5G, ergonomic seating to reduce motion sickness, video conferencing capabilities, and more,” said Bennoit. The prototype, which took around two years from ideation to development, is continuously evolving with new features being added based on user feedback and industry needs. He added that the car is part of AWS’s broader approach to innovation, identifying real-world problems faced by companies and then co-developing digital solutions. “The idea is to look at practical use cases, whether it’s AI for biodiversity monitoring or mobile office solutions, and bring research into everyday life,” said Bennoit.

Both speakers stressed the importance of industry-academic partnerships, especially in developing economies like India. “India presents a vibrant environment for digital experimentation. Our Hyderabad collaboration is just the beginning,” Liebau said. As AWS continues to push the boundaries of applied research, its Indo-German model could serve as a template for global tech-driven sustainability initiatives. Whether it’s in the realm of smart agriculture, circular economy, or futuristic mobility, the institute is demonstrating how digital innovation can create real-world impact, and India is clearly part of that future.
