Automation to catalyse India’s growth: Narayan Kumar

In the past decade, India’s manufacturing landscape has undergone a significant evolution, driven by the Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative and strategic government policies like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. These efforts not just encouraged local production but also attracted global manufacturers, solidifying India’s position as a global manufacturing hub. With the ambitious goal of increasing the manufacturing sector's contribution to GDP from 16% to 25%, the National Manufacturing Policy and PLI schemes further aim to propel India towards self-sufficiency, reducing import dependence and creating employment opportunities.
India has emerged as the third most sought-after manufacturing destination globally and is on track to achieve export potential worth $1 trillion by 2030. The rapid adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and automation is propelling this growth. Industries like automotive, electronics, pharmaceuticals, and e-commerce amongst others are increasingly leveraging smart factory solutions to enhance efficiency and competitiveness. Additionally, the rollout of 5G is enabling seamless communication within these factories, fostering operational excellence.
As India continues its journey toward advanced manufacturing, technologies such as automation, digitalisation, and additive manufacturing are redefining supply chain paradigms. The following are the key technologies shaping the manufacturing in 2025.
Proliferation of industrial automation and AI
As per industry estimates, India's industrial automation market, valued at $15 billion in 2024, is likely to grow to $29 billion by 2029, with transformative trends expected to pick up steam in 2025. Automation integrates sophisticated systems like smart sensor solutions to enhance precision and efficiency in manufacturing. It reduces operational costs, improves quality, and ensures worker safety by automating routine and hazardous tasks.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen-AI) will assist OEMS by optimising design, processes, and resource efficiency. Gen-AI will support innovative product designs, simulating manufacturing scenarios, predicting maintenance needs, and enhancing quality control, thereby improving go-to-market time. For example, Servo motors with AI capabilities exemplify how machines can self-tune to enhance efficiency, reducing downtime and ensuring high-quality output. As the adoption of AI-driven tools picks up steam, it will streamline supply chains, enable mass customisation, and reduce energy and material waste, fostering sustainability.
The AI can assist in training workers by making immersive simulations or virtual environments to demonstrate complex manufacturing processes. It can also provide real-time guidance during production, improving worker efficiency and safety. For instance, AI-generated simulations can train workers on how to operate advanced machinery or handle emergency scenarios.
OEMs are integrating automation to not only enhance efficiency and reduce waste but also align with their broader sustainability goals. This strategic shift is essential for maintaining competitiveness in a market increasingly focused on environmental stewardship. Automation streamlines production processes, minimises human error, and optimises resource use, leading to cost optimisation and improved operational performance. It also supports circular economy practices by enabling modular manufacturing that facilitates product repair and recycling. Additionally, it helps them meet compliance obligations with environmental regulations through accurate tracking and reporting.
The emphasis on innovation and technology adoption will catalyse a cultural shift within the manufacturing sector. OEMs will need to transition from traditional practices to more advanced, technology-driven models that prioritise sustainability and efficiency. This shift will require not only investment in new technologies but also a commitment to continuous learning and adaptation among the workforce.
As India seeks to establish itself as a preferred manufacturing destination, the development of robust local supply chains will be critical. Strengthening these supply chains will reduce dependency on imports and enhance the speed of production cycles, ultimately leading to greater economic resilience. The focus on indigenous innovation will empower local manufacturers to respond swiftly to market demands while fostering a competitive edge.
In the evolving landscape, collaboration between academia, industry, and government will play a pivotal role in driving advancements. By aligning educational initiatives with industry needs, India can cultivate a skilled workforce equipped to navigate the complexities of modern manufacturing. This collaborative approach will not only enhance productivity but also ensure that India remains at the forefront of global manufacturing trends.
