ABB, a global leader in electrification and automation, is
expanding its manufacturing presence in Bengaluru with greenfield campuses, new
product lines, service and training centres, and precision equipment
manufacturing across its Electrification, Motion, and Automation businesses.
The groundbreaking of an integrated Motion facility in Peenya was led by ABB
Group CEO Morten Wierod, while the Electrification and Automation Nelamangala
Campus 2 on Kunigal Road was also inaugurated.
ABB has a long-established presence in Karnataka, with
Bengaluru serving as a key manufacturing and technology hub for the company.
With this latest expansion, ABB will operate three manufacturing locations in
the state, employing over 3,000 people across its manufacturing operations.
“This expansion reflects ABB’s long-term commitment to India
and our local-for-local strategy. By enhancing our manufacturing and technology
capabilities in Karnataka, we are bringing advanced ABB technologies closer to
customers, enabling industries to improve energy efficiency, digitalise
operations, and support India’s infrastructure growth,” said Sanjeev Sharma, Country Head and Managing
Director, ABB India.
The Motion business is expanding its Peenya campus with two
new manufacturing facilities, covering 6,100 sq m and accommodating up to 300
employees once fully operational. The new facilities will produce a range of
energy-efficient motors, including flameproof designs, roller table variants,
and large smoke ventilation models, along with low-voltage drives and
programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The campus will also feature a service
and training centre enhanced with digital tools and remote diagnostics to
support customers throughout the equipment lifecycle. Over the past 12 years,
ABB’s high-efficiency motors and drives have delivered annual energy savings of
approximately 20 TWh, equal to nearly half of Delhi’s yearly electricity
consumption.
At the Nelamangala campus, a 16,470 sq m multi-business
manufacturing hub has been established to support ABB’s Electrification and
Automation businesses. This facility will expand production for smart power
technologies, system interface units, gas analyser systems, service labs,
excitation systems, and high-power rectifiers. It will also scale up the
manufacturing of power management solutions critical for data centres, which
will increase production nearly tenfold. ABB’s low and medium voltage systems
already power over 30 per cent of India’s hyperscale data centres.
This campus will further advance ABB’s Make in India portfolio,
with facilities for blending and excitation solutions for the lube, paint, and
paper & pulp industries. The excitation supply factory will provide systems
not only to India but also to regional markets, supporting reliable power
generation and resilient grids. The blending facility will include assembly
lines for pigging line valves, automation staging cabinets, and on-site factory
acceptance tests (FAT) to ensure efficient and reliable operations in the
Indian paint industry. Additionally, high-power rectifiers supplied to local
chemical and metals customers will now be extended to regional markets.
ABB recently announced a $75 million investment in 2026 to
expand its manufacturing and R&D capabilities in critical segments,
creating over 300 new skilled jobs in engineering, operations, and research.
This investment, alongside its $35 million expenditure in 2025, reflects ABB's
ongoing commitment to scaling its local-for-local strategy in India.
Karnataka remains a key centre for technology talent in
software, manufacturing, and R&D. ABB’s continued investments are
strengthening the state’s industrial ecosystem, expanding local manufacturing,
developing specialised skills, and supporting supplier networks across the
region.
