We are localising up to 70% of hardware for UAVs : Vikas Batra

Please tell us about your contributions to the aerospace and defence (A&D) sector.
Aero to Z focuses on niche tactical surveillance and UAV technologies, bringing combat-proven, world-class equipment to India. Our contributions lie in bridging technology gaps by integrating advanced sensor and radar solutions into India’s defence ecosystem. We also play a role in localising these technologies, building supply chains, and enhancing India’s self-reliance in critical defence technology.

What advancements have been made in terms of drone manufacturing, and how do you keep up with industry trends?
The drone industry is evolving rapidly, particularly in miniaturisation, endurance, and AI-driven capabilities. We focus on tactical UAVs for surveillance, leveraging partnerships with global players rather than starting from scratch. By localising these technologies and adapting them to Indian requirements, we ensure we stay ahead. AI integration in radars helps detect low-flying, slow-moving threats, distinguishing drones from environmental clutter.

What are the most critical challenges in drone manufacturing, and how does your company address them?
The key challenges include policy consistency, level playing field for mid-sized firms, and access to large-scale contracts. While government policies have evolved positively, further improvements in MSME participation and procurement rules would be beneficial. Our approach involves leveraging policy incentives, building a strong local ecosystem, and advocating for competitive fairness in technology-based bids.

How do government policies impact your manufacturing and R&D strategies?
Policies supporting MSMEs, such as exemption from Earnest Money Deposits (EMD) and relaxed past experience requirements, have enabled us to participate in defence contracts. The push for Atmanirbhar Bharat has facilitated technology absorption, and further policy evolution can enhance opportunities for mid-sized companies like ours to contribute more significantly.

Can you elaborate on the integration of drone technology with existing defence systems?
Our tactical UAVs integrate advanced electro-optic and radar-based surveillance systems. AI-driven radars enhance detection capabilities, allowing differentiation between genuine threats and non-threatening objects. This ensures seamless integration with larger defence platforms like missile systems and ground-based air defence.

How is your company contributing to India's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, Make in India initiative, and Viksit Bharat 2047? How are you helping make India a drone manufacturing hub?
We are localising up to 70% of hardware for radar and UAV technologies and working toward full indigenous manufacturing. Our collaboration with global partners ensures complete technology transfer, enabling India to develop a self-sustaining defence ecosystem. Through knowledge absorption and a robust supply chain, we are contributing to India’s goal of becoming a drone manufacturing hub.

What are your plans for investment, facility expansion, and exports?
We have acquired land and are in the process of setting up an advanced manufacturing facility. This will serve as a key hub for both domestic production and exports. While details remain confidential due to our partnerships, we are committed to scaling up operations and enhancing India’s role in the global defence supply chain.

What is your future outlook for India’s defence sector?
India’s defence sector is on a strong growth trajectory, driven by indigenisation, rising budgets, and evolving security threats. The emphasis on self-reliance and policy support for MSMEs will create significant opportunities. We foresee increased adoption of AI-driven defence systems, greater localisation, and stronger global collaborations positioning India as a key defence manufacturing hub.
