India’s defence exports rise 14 times from FY16 to over Rs 210 billion

India's defence exports have surged dramatically, increasing 14 times from FY 2016-17 to FY 2023-24. This growth, from Rs 15.22 billion to over Rs 210 billion, underscores the nation’s rising stature as a global arms supplier and highlights the significant role of the private sector in this transformation.

Proactive government policies have been pivotal in this remarkable rise. Initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ have fostered a robust defence manufacturing ecosystem. By simplifying export procedures, providing financial incentives, and encouraging private sector involvement, the government has set the stage for defence exports to flourish.

The private sector's contribution has been instrumental. From a mere 13% of defence exports in FY 2017, it has risen to an impressive 62% in FY 2024. Leading companies like Larsen & Toubro, Tata Advanced Systems, and Bharat Forge have made significant strides, investing heavily in R&D and establishing world-class production facilities. Collaborations between private players and defence public sector undertakings (DPSUs) have driven technological advancements and enhanced production capacities.

India’s defence exports now reach diverse markets in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The export portfolio includes missiles, radars, naval systems, helicopters, and surveillance equipment, showcasing India as a versatile and reliable defence supplier.

A key aspect of India’s defence export success is its naval capabilities. The country has developed a range of advanced naval systems that have garnered international attention. India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities have seen substantial growth, with platforms like the INS Vikrant, the country’s first indigenously built aircraft carrier, highlighting this progress. The successful construction and operationalisation of such platforms demonstrate India’s growing self-reliance and technological prowess.

India has also been exporting various naval systems, including fast attack craft, offshore patrol vessels, and maritime weapon systems. The export of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, developed jointly with Russia, stands out as a notable achievement, with countries like the Philippines showing significant interest in these systems.
