IISc-incubated startup SpaceFields hot-tests aerospike rocket engine

SpaceFields, an IISc-incubated startup, has successfully completed a hot test of its aerospike rocket engine, showcasing the advanced technology's potential for improving space missions. Apurwa Masook, CEO, SpaceFields, highlighted that aerospike nozzles offer altitude-compensating capabilities, allowing for optimal efficiency across varying pressure regimes. This technology provides a significant upgrade over conventional bell nozzles, reducing fuel consumption and the need for staging while achieving the same payload to orbit.

Masook explained that at higher altitudes, the aerospike nozzle expands the engine exhaust to a larger effective nozzle area ratio, thereby increasing thrust and specific impulse, making it ideal for single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) rockets.

During the static-fire test, the engine utilised an HTPB-based composite propellant, achieving a maximum pressure of 11 bar, peak thrust of 2000N, and generating a total impulse of 54,485.9 N. The engine is built primarily with Titanium grade 5 and protected by a Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer-based ablative thermal insulation, for which SpaceFields recently secured a patent.
