Heat treatment process needs quenching of steel components from high temperatures above 850°C for achieving hardness certain other properties. This process of sudden cooling develops stresses into the component. The stresses and the associated phase change also results into minor dimensional changes into components. All these factors result in distortion and many times cracking of the component. Thus the job gets rejected after the heat treatment process. This problem is more prevalent in induction hardening processes. Here jobs are heated on the machine and sudden cooling is carried out by water. To avoid cracking during quenching, Metachem Sales Corporation offers Plasto Quench – a polymer based product. This is added around 10% into the water tank. Plasto Quench reduces the severity of water quenching without sacrificing hardness and other metallurgical properties. By varying percentage of Plasto Quench in the water suitable metallurgical properties are achieved without cracking and with due control over the distortion of components. This also contains specially developed additives to avoid corrosion of components and machine due to plain water. The plain water is prone to develop microbiological activities very fast. This results in to foul smell and this makes water acidic resulting in to rusting of the components and machine. This product can be effectively used for quenching carried out in other heat treatment systems such as salt bath, pit type and sealed quench furnaces. The product can be used for quenching of forgings in mass scale. Polymer quenching very is safe as it reduces fire hazards associated with oil quenching. Plasto Quench uses non-hazardous, environmentally safe components. The product is available in 5, 50 and 200 kg packings.
