Precision Positioning Performance Specifications

Industrial Devices Corporation has put an end to "specsmanship" by defining all of its precision positioning performance specifications according to ISO 230-2, an internationally recognised measurement standard that also adheres to ASME requirements. The result is a common language of positioning terminology that simplifies system specification and prevents disappointing misapplications. Successfully solving a precision positioning application requires the analysis of several critical specifications. Most engineers are surprised to learn that most manufacturers set their own standards for accuracy and repeatability. Unfortunately, this often leads to disappointing results, particularly in demanding, high precision positioning applications. Advantages of utilizing ISO 230-2 as the specifications standard include: all specifications are complete system specifications; all specifications are measured in a thermally stable environment; testing includes simulating operating conditions; testing measures the effects of system hysteresis; and all specifications are determined with statistical error bands,. The result is a more conservative specification methodology than the typical raw data plots offered by many other manufacturers.
