AB Sandvik Steel has announced that its Strip and Wire divisions in Sandviken, Sweden and its Gusab steel spring wire manufacturing plant in Mjolby, Sweden have been approved to automotive industry quality standards QS-9000 and VDA 6.1. At the same time, the company's wire and strip division operations in the US have also been approved to QS-9000. The company believes that they are one of the first producers of steel strip and wire products to gain such approvals. QS-9000 is the common and benchmark supplier standard for the Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation. VDA 6.1 (Verband der Automobil industries V) specifies the German motor industry's standard requirements for suppliers. Both standards are based on the 1994 edition of ISO 9001 but with additional requirements, particular to the industry. There are many automotive applications for Sandvik's strip and wire products. Key end uses for precision strip steel are flapper valves for air conditioning units, discs for shock absorbers and substrates for catalytic converters. The involvement of the wire division is in the supply of drawn and flat rolled wire for various automotive applications.
