Fluorine-Free Water Repellent Finishes

Awareness impulse: Fluorocarbons are still the state-of-the-art chemistry for water repellents. But this chemistry results in undesirable discharge of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluoroctane sulfonate (PFOS) and fluortelomer alcohol (FTOH), because of their persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic properties. These perfluorinated surfactants (PFS) are side products or unreacted raw materials in the production of fluorocarbons. The industry’s first solution to this problem was to shift from C8 to C6 FC chain length. But due to serious environmental discussions over the last couple of years about impurities and side products in these C6 fluorocarbons, a discussion about possible alternatives again arises: fluorine-free alternatives.

The special polymers used ensure a high durable water repellent effect. On top of that the product offers a very pleasant hand feel to the fabric. BAYGARD® WRS is totally fluorine-free and does not contain any harmful substances such as heavy metals or formaldehyde. BAYGARD® WRC is based on hydrocarbons and especially designed for cotton fibres and blends from cotton and synthetic fibres. This product is totally fluorine-free and is a handle improver.
