Coatings for Friction, Lubrication & Wear

Hex Bond Lubes brings out a range of resin-based coatings, which are used in a range of engineering applications. They have different families of coatings depending on applications. For example Molybdenum di sulfide (MoS2) or PTFE or graphite independently or in combination are used to combat problems of solid lubrication and slidability. Wear performance is also significantly improved. Solid lubricants like MoS2 are very good for high load, low speed applications where grease or oils shear away from the contact zone. These coatings are also particularly suitable for dusty environment where the use of grease and oils can prove to be detrimental to the system as the dust caught by the grease acts as an abrasive and hence damages the parts further. These coatings can also be used in areas where the grease or other liquid lubricants can contaminate the products. This is true in industries like pharmaceuticals and food industry where dry film lubrication can really be a boon. Fretting wear is an insidious form of damage, which can make engineering assemblies totally inoperative and dysfunctional. Micro welding caused by vibration of mating parts causing fine debris, which instantaneously oxidises and the volumetric increase results in seizure of parts. Dry solid lubricants prevents the micro welding – shear mechanism and the additional lubrication helps not only in preventing fretting wear but also lowers the friction of mating parts resulting in lower requirement of torque, hence lower horsepower, energy saving is a positive fall out of these coatings.
