Orbital Systems offer a range of linear transducers for industrial automation, manufactured by Elap SpA, Italy. PD/PE Series linear transducers are robust in construction with non-contact optical measurement. The output digital signal pulses A and B, along with zero marker pulse, are available with resolutions of 50, 10 and 5 microns, after electronic quadruplication. Lengths from 50 mm up to 1000 mm are offered as standard products. Linear transducers PD/PE are fitted with ball joints on either sides and are extremely rugged units. They have IP 65 protection and are superior to the linear optical scales for use in hostile applications such as on injection moulding machines, presses, SPM's, turret punching presses, etc. Linear transducers are superior to linear potentiometers in several aspects. They are used in applications that require high accuracies. Besides, there is no wear and tear of the wiper arms as in a linear potentiometer since this is a non-contact measuring device, thereby resulting in longer life.
