R S Electronics offers Proximity Sensor. This is an inductive proximity sensor. Principle of operation: they provide an excellent means for detecting the presence of a wide range of metallic targets. This detection is accomplished without contacting the target and is mechanically wear free. In principle, an inductive proximity switch comprises a high-frequency oscillator circuit followed by a level detector and a post-amplification signal circuit and drives a buffered solid-state output. In effect, when a metallic object is brought within the effective range of the emitted field of the oscillator. This amplitude shift is converted to a digital signal by the level detection (i.e., a Schmitt trigger), which drives a buffer stage. This is available in DC as well as in AC, with various sizes from M8-M80, with various configurations and sensing distance.
