Sensors that directly measure cavity pressure make contact with the plastic melts in the cavity. The problem thereby is that the gap between the sensor and bore is filled during the processing of low-viscosity melts and the sensors usually employed for such tasks generate incorrect signals. Kistler has developed a new cavity pressure sensor. It is insensitive to these influences and is especially suitable for the processing of the low viscosity melts like those employed for encapsulating of microchips. The sensor, Type 6167A, was tested successfully with Siemens during the manufacture of IC-components for mobile and cordless telephones (GMS and DECT standards) and the measurement signal was not influenced in any way over a longer period of time. In principle, this sensor can be employed for the processing of low-viscosity melts in a pressure range of 0-200 bar. The sensor, Type 6167A, is compatible installation-wise with the world's most sold standard sensor, Type 6157B. Due to its special measuring element, it has an appreciably greater sensitivity and thus results automatically in a higher resolution of the signal.
