Crack Detection Using Power Pack On Wheels

Magnetic particle inspection of large castings and fabrications demands that the power pack [magnetising source] should be brought near the job. Large castings and fabrications being heavy are impossible to be loaded on stationary installations for crack detection. Moreover, the heavy cross-suctions of the castings and fabrications render the use of electromagnetic yoke ineffective. FerroChem have developed ‘Power Pack on Wheels’ in order to meet the typical need. ‘Power Pack on Wheels’ is a sturdy box of dimensions 1000 x 800 x 800 [L x B x H] supported on wheels and is provided with two handles for movement. Power pack is capable of generating magnetising current of 4000 A, maximum, at ‘no load’. Magnetisation by AC and HWDC is provided on the power pack. The current control is through thyristorised circuits to provide precision, accuracy, and repeatability. Digital ammeters are provided for measuring and indicating the value of current passing. The meters are provided with ‘hold’ facility, i.e., the value of current passed last time is retained till next operation. Magnetising cables of desired length are provided. Cables are provided with fittings at connecting end and with prods with trigger switch on ‘testing’ end. A simple mechanical lever is provided for connecting cables to power pack. This eliminates the hassle of using spanner every time. The inside of the power pack is well ventilated with the help of cooling fan provided inside. Digital timers are provided to control accurately the duration of passing the magnetisation current. The power pack on wheels is built for heavy-duty applications and can stand any rugged conditions, which are generally experienced on shop floors. All electrical and mechanical parts used are of standard make. Circuit diagrams are provided. Storing space is provided on the top of the power pack for keeping cables with prods. This is compact and self-sufficient magnetizing source for crack detection by MPI.
