Laser Distance Sensor

PG Electronics has introduces yet another precision and reliable Sensor type: ELA-301, for contactless measurement of movement or distance using laser light source. The laser light emitter and precision sensor are located in the same housing. The displacement of the object is sensed by the reflected light from it and is evaluated in proper form. A movement of few microns is also registered. The analogue output is available in 0-10Volts or 4-20mA, and is dependant on the distance between sensor and the object. Further specific operating distance can be selected to give a switching output as an additional option. This output can be set by merely pressing a `Teach? button. Position selection is effected almost instantly and is indicated by an LED.

The sensor is available in two different models for measuring distances of upto 85mm and 150mm respectively. The visible laser spot helps to set up and install the unit with ease. The electronic unit is incorporated in tough polycarbonate housing and has `In-Range? and `Out-Range? LED indicators, Green and Red respectively. A four pin lockable connector with supply and output status indicators is provided for ease of installation and maintenance. Mounting bracket is also supplied for the purpose. The minimum detectable object is 0.5mm and Sensor has an accuracy of 0.1mm. For smaller `meaningful movements? (say 10mm or less), a resolution of better than 50 microns can be achieved. The sensor is suitable for operation on 24V DC programmable analogue output corresponding to desired displacement could be supplied optionally.

The unit can be easily used for precision static and dynamic displacement or even thickness measurements. Similarly for level and fill height measurement, this sensor is ideal. The ELA-301 can be adopted for various other applications like online parameter measurements such as height, outside diameter, thickness, length and `slot depth-like? commutator undercut, run and stroke measurement, groove or slit detection, oscillation or vibration and many general purpose inspections. For other applications where continuous feedback information is required for controls like diameter measurement during build-up of foil, paper, etc., this forms an important part of the control loop.
