Gantry Robot

Handling hot and heavy objects is the toughest task in any manufacturing activity. Human fatigue and safety are very serious issues. In spite of these concerns achieving higher and higher productivity is a need of the hour. Automation and Control (Pune) has successfully designed, manufactured and commissioned a gantry to handle billets with weight up to150 kg and temperatures of 1250°C. The total length of the gantry is 10.0 mtr; and height 3.5 mtr. The billet that comes out of an induction hardening unit is fast extracted by means of a gripper and trolley mechanism. The temperature sensor gives a command to the gantry, whether the billet is OK or reject. Based on this command the robot picks up the billet and conveys OK billet to the press at a distance of 7.0 mtr. The rejected billets are conveyed to the reject bin, which is positioned at a distance of 3.0 mtr. In the opposite direction, the specially designed gripper system is positive and water cooled. The gantry is operated with servomotors. The servo controllers use latest state-of-the-art technology, for safety and reliability.
