Automation in Industry

Automation is the use of control systems in conjuncture with other application technologies such as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), DCS (Distributed Control System), NC (Numerical Control), CNC (Computer Numerical Control), etc., to control industrial machinery and other processes, reducing the dependence on human intervention. Automation is one step beyond mechanisation. Mechanisation is the method, which provides mechanical means to humans to carry out the physical work. Automation can be applied to those mechanised methods, which are repeated constantly. The sensors and the controls take over the operation of the machine and run the machine in accordance to the sensory inputs and the logic programmed for those inputs.
