Arc flashes occur five to 10 times daily in North America, causing about 80 percent of all electrical injuries. The temperature of an arc flash can exceed 35,000 degrees (four times the sun’s surface temperature) and cause third-degree burns, sight loss, hearing loss and even death. Companies can protect employees with equipment that is designed to control arc flash exposure by extinguishing the arc, controlling the spread of the arc, or channelling the explosion away from personnel. Rockwell Automation offers Allen-Bradley’s Centerline ArcShield medium voltage arc-resistant motor controllers, which redirect arc-flash energy out through relief vents at the top of the unit and away from personnel via an overhead space and heavy-gauge steel enclosures.
