A transformer essentially consists of magnetic core, build-up of insulated silicon steel laminations, upon which are wound sets of coils suitably located with respect to each other and are termed as primary and secondary windings.
Such a combination may be used to derive a voltage higher or lower than what is immediately available.. In the former case, the transformer is termed as step-up and in the latter case it is known as step-down transformer. The primary winding is that winding to which the supply voltage is applied. irrespective of secondary winding.
