Harmonic Filters

Ambik Harmonic Filters offers Harmonic Filters. These are essentially used to reduce/ eliminate harmonics from the electrical power system. Non-linear loads like DC/ AC drives, induction hardening/ melting furnaces, rectifiers, UPS systems, etc., generate harmonics. This non-linear equipment will generally have low power factor. It is not possible to improve the overall system power factor with the help of power capacitors, when non-linear loads are present in the system. Application of normal power capacitors leads to serious problems like over-loading of the capacitors itself, amplification of harmonic currents, etc. Amplification of harmonic currents can further damage any vital part of the electrical power system. Harmonic filters will help overcoming above problems. They will also improve the power factor. Harmonic Filters are available in tuned and de-tuned types. Tuned filters are designed to trap a particular harmonic frequency say, 5th, 7th, 11th, etc. They will offer "zero" impedance to these frequencies. De-tuned filters are designed to absorb part of predominant harmonic frequencies in a power system. The inductor and capacitor circuit is tuned below the predominant harmonic frequency. If the pre-dominant frequency is 5th, the filter will be tuned between 189 Hz to 220 Hz. These are useful in power factor improvement. Along with power factor improvement, they will also reduce part of the harmonics from the system. Since these filters are tuned to a particular frequency, it is possible to switch them as per the requirement of system reactive power. These can be configured in stand-alone or automatic mode.
