Surges, spikes, transients and earth potential rise due to lightning strikes, electromagnetic induction, welding sets and electrical load switching cause load cell failure. The epoxy bond between the strain gauges and the base metal fails resulting in drift, change in resistance characteristics and most of all performance. ME 1330 series load cell surge barriers from Microedge Electronics are surge mitigation modules that absorb, divert and dissipate excessive surge energy into earth to protect sensitive load cells from breakdown and malfunction. The ME 1331-T is a single stage parallel type surge barrier based on TVS diode technology for sensor line longitudinal/transverse protection and GDT for shield wire protection. These are ideally mounted close to individual load cells and indicator electronics. No recalibration required. Response time < 1 nanosecond. The ME 1335 GT is bi-directional, 5-stage high energy dissipation model ideal for multi-load cell configurations. GDTs [90 V/10 kA] protect both signal entry/exit points. The middle stages are configured with very fast acting TVS diode network in tandem with resistor/inductor co-ordination components in order to absorb and divert damaging surges. This model requires recalibration. Good earthing systems are a pre-requisite for any surge protection scheme.
