Lighting-Control System Cuts Power Consumption

Energy savings of between 20 and 24% can be achieved when fluorescent and discharge lighting installations are fitted with the monitoring and control system from a British company. Suitable for industrial, commercial and public-service lighting applications, both in and out of doors, the Zenergy system, from Zenergy & Cie, monitors the incoming mains power supply for voltage fluctuations and reduces the output voltage to a preset level through a specially designed transformer. This reduces electricity consumption-and thereby energy costs-but the resultant reduction in lighting level is only minimal and is not perceptible to the human eye. Effects of load shedding are counteracted because the reduction in voltage effected by the transformer is less when the input voltage is low than when it is at maximum level. The system is fully automated and will work 24 hours a day if required. There is no limit to the number of lights that can be controlled by the system, but large premises are typically served by several units, each of which would correspond to a zone protected by an individual circuit breaker. Such zoning arrangements maximise system efficiency while reducing costs and minimising disruption during installation-which is normally carried out in one day by a competent technician. Systems are housed in boxes measuring 600 x 400 x 210 mm, 950 x 550 x 230 mm or 900 x 900 x 300 mm, according to application. Zenergy systems are designed and manufactured for continuous use and contain high-quality components to provide reliability over an expected life of 30-40 years.
