The Strain Gauge is used to determine the degree and behaviour of forces such as stress or load. External force applied to any elastic material generates stress, which subsequently generates strain in the deformation of material. Strain gauges, used for this purpose, are constructed by bonding a fine electric resistance wire or photo etched metallic resistance foil to an electric insulation base attaching gauge leads. The strain generated in the specimen is relayed through the base to the fine wire or foil, where expansion or contraction occurs. This results in the fine wire or foil experiencing resistance variation, exactly proportional to the strain. The resistance change is very small and requires a Wheatstone bridge circuit to convert it to voltage output. The strain gauge is connected to a strain meter and measured on a digital or analogue display.
Mechanical, marine, aircraft, civil engineering, automobile, architecture, and medical applications.
