Weldcraft, Bangalore-based welding electrode manufacturer, has developed an indigenous electrode, Koldweld SGR, for roughing up the rollers that crush sugarcane. In sugar mills, the sugarcane is crushed more or less in a similar way as seen in sugarcane juice shops. The only difference is that sugar mill rollers are much larger. For better grip and crushing, it is necessary for these rollers to be rough so that maximum amount of sugarcane juice is extracted. This sugarcane juice is later processed into sugar. Earlier, sugarcane was crushed through bolted grooves fixed on the rolls. This was subsequently replaced for better crushing efficiency by roughing up the rolls with weld deposit. Welding electrode for this application was developed abroad. Electrodes in use in India so far for this application bore a foreign brand name. A unique feature of this indigenously developed electrode is its high wear-resistance capacity, which reflects in improved crushing efficiency resulting in lower cost of production. By switching over to this electrode, Indian sugar mills will save a lot, not only in the cost of the electrodes but also in better productivity and the country can save precious foreign exchange.
