Mechanical stresses in railroad wheels are caused by the heating and cooling during drag-braking. Small cracks may grow and cause wheel breaking. The ultrasonic set-up evaluates the stress state of wheels. The automated non-destructive stress analysis takes 1.5 minutes. Mechanical stresses in rails cause the pulling apart and bucking of rails. The automated portable ultrasonic set-up enables the stress analysis on both new rails and on rails on the track.
