Metered data is the most important source to solve problems that occur in electrical systems. Today’s meters provide ample data but a consultant or experienced engineer is hired to analyse and interpret the data captured by the meters. This is often a slow (and expensive) process to acquire the relevant information and to arrive at the correct solution. Schneider Electric Conzerv India provides immediate troubleshooting by using meters with the right tools. The ION7550 and ION7650 meters have disturbance, direction, detection capabilities that enable to quickly and accurately determine the disturbance locations. The comprehensive algorithms analyse the wave shape disturbance alarm data and determine the direction of the disturbance relative from the meter. The results of this analysis are provided in the meter event log. Benefits include: determining the source of power quality events more accurately; minimising repetitive events by quickly locating disturbance sources; and increasing production uptime by improving facility power quality levels. The ION7550/ION7650 disturbance direction detection can quickly indicate the location of a disturbance’s fault (upstream or downstream from the meter). By installing more than one meter on an electrical system, one can further pinpoint the locations of disturbance sources within their systems. Example: A large facility experiences a disturbance early morning. While their equipment tripped offline, no problem was found within the facility that would cause the disturbance. Further investigation revealed that the source of this incident was a single-phase fault on the utility. Because they had installed a PowerLogic ION 7650 on the main switchgear of the facility, enabled them to analyse the waveform – using the meter’s disturbance, direction, detection capabilities – which indicated that this fault occurred upstream from the metering point (i.e., the utility).
