Portable Contamination Monitor

Para Electronics, the manufacturing division of Electronic Enterprises (I), has been developing many laboratory equipments especially for nuclear plants. The company has developed a Portable Contamination Monitor, Model PCM-3, considering the needs of the local steel industry. This is a micro-controller based, economical, stand alone, portable, battery operated instrument. PCM-3 is supplied with externally mounted pancake type GM detector with 1 metre interconnecting cable. Alpha, Beta (without shutter) and Gamma/x-rays radiation can be detected by using pancake GM detector. Necessary electronics and high voltage supply are housed in an elegant ABS plastic enclosure. Coaxial cable with BNC connector connects the GM tube to the counter unit. PCM-3 provides three types of measurement ranges as 0.01-100.00 Bq/gm for contamination, 0-20,000 uR/hr as dose rate and 0-10,000 CPS for count rate. User can select materials like aluminium, copper, iron and cast iron, etc., enter material thickness from 0.01 to 200 mm for Bq/gm measurement. PCM-3, has audio output, backlit On/Off facility. It has 2 lines LCD display-to-display reading and other parameters. User can set alarm level throughout the range and illuminated red LED indicates alarm condition. Low battery, no pulse indications are also provided for diagnostic purposes. 6 V NI-MH, batteries are used for PCM-3 operation which can run up to 8-10 hrs of continuous use. PCM-3, though intended to be used for measurement of radioactive contamination in steel or other metals, is suitable for health physics applications in radioisotope laboratories, nuclear power plants, nuclear medicine centres, etc.
