Materials with a high silicon content, such as the cast aluminium alloys frequently used in building aircraft, produce heavy wear on standard cutting materials. For this reason polycrystalline diamond cutting materials (PCD) with their high degree of hardness and high resistance to wear are used in this area. Using multiple insert tools, cutting speeds of up to 2500 m/min are achieved. With appropriate tooth feed, feed rates are obtained in the rapid traverse range. Frequently it is not the tool which defines the application data but the efficiency of the machine tool.
