These columns are unmatched when it comes to separating mixture of two pure liquids with different boiling points. A temperature between their respective boiling points can be attained through heating of the mixture. At one or more points, a liquid feed containing the mixture of both liquids enters the column. When this liquid flows over the plates, vapor bubbles are forced out through the liquid via holes in the plates.
