The aim of Steer-By-Wire (SBW) technology is to completely do away with as many mechanical components as possible.
- The absence of a steering column implies that the hand wheel does not jut into the driver in the event of a front end collision; the hand wheel system can be placed anywhere in the vehicle, this implies that there would be no difference in the steering system components for left-hand versus right-hand drive vehicles. Improved steering feel: Since the hand wheel systems are mechanically not linked to the road wheel system, steering feel provided to the driver can be arbitrarily good, this allows for configuring functionality such as "touch-steering" where steering action is realised with minimum effort.
- Provides a low cost SBW system, which eliminates mechanical linkages like steering shaft, column, gear reduction mechanism etc. between the steering wheel and road wheels and replaces it with a mechatronic system consisting of computing units, sensors and actuators.
