Organic fuels naturally "agglomerate" or "polymerise" where hydrocarbon chains attach to create larger compounds. The result is only partial combustion (loss of power/economy), carbon deposits on injector, higher emissions, eventually developing sludge, filter clogging and engine shutdown. Modern refining techniques (catalytic cracking) have made the fuels less stable Exxon, BP, Chevron and others state on their websites that the shelf life of these products are 6 to 12 months under optimal storage conditions. Fuel spends months travelling the supply chain and getting mixed with fuel in storage tanks. Storage tanks develop sludge over time and this gets agitated and mixed in with fresh fuel. The result is any fuel delivery can be tainted.
