Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jellies are in diverse industrial requirements. These are available in various colours, which may range from purest white to dark amber and have found wide uses in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and many industrial applications (protective coating of metals). The jelly is manufactured according to the pharmacopoeia stipulations, which lay down the limit for ultra-violet absorbency to make sure that the jelly is free from carcinogenic compounds. According to Indian pharmacopoeia stipulation, the ultra-violet absorbency for white petroleum jelly, extinction of a 1cm, layer of 0.05 W/V solutions in ISO- octane should not be more than 0.5 at 290 nm. These retain their gel like structure.
