Active Harmonic Filters

Amtech Electronics offers Axpert-ActiVSINE Active Harmonic Filters as a solution to power pollution caused by more and more use of non-linear equipment such as variable frequency drives, rectifiers, DC drives, induction furnaces and so on. These non-linear loads draw non-sinusoidal current from a sinusoidal voltage source. Current distortion can result in voltage distortion and spread the pollution wherever such voltage is supplied. This results in various problems like over voltage/current in the distribution network; over heated power cables; copper and iron losses in transformers, motors and generators; overheating in all types of electronics systems causing components failures; nuisance tripping in circuit breakers and protection relays; inaccuracy of instrument measurement; and voltage distortion and lagging in power factor. The harmonics are introduced because of the distortion of current drawn by non-linear equipments. There are various equipments to eliminate or control the harmonics. The most advanced technique of elimination of harmonics is by making use of active harmonic filter. Active harmonic filter consists of an IGBT based switching unit controlled by DSP (digital signal processor) and current sensors to sense load current. The active harmonic filter senses the total current in the non-linear load and compensates the harmonic current so that the current drawn from voltage source is sinusoidal. Active harmonic filters are available from 2 5A to 200 A harmonic current compensating capacity, in single module. The modules can be paralleled to enhance the capacity.
