Sumitomo of Japan offers Cyclo gearboxes based on the cycloidal principle. These drives transmit power equal to that of gears, but in a smaller and most efficient package. In contrast to the circular motion of gears, cycloidal drives use non-circular or eccentric components to convert input rotation into a cycloidal motion. This cycloidal motion is then converted back into smooth, concentric output rotation and in the process speed reduction occurs. More than 6 million units are said to be working daily all over the world, replacing helical, worm and bevel gearboxes. They are highly efficient up to 95% and can handle momentary peak intermittent shock overloads of up to 500%, 2.5 times more than any other conventional gearing. These gearboxes are very compact compared to conventional gearboxes and also have large torque transmitting capacity. They are ideal for highly dynamic applications since inertia is very low hence suitable for frequent start, stop and reversing duties. Cyclo gearboxes are available from 0.1 to 132 kW and 1/6-1/10,00,000 ratio and with or without motor suitable for foot/flange type mounting. They are now available in India against rupee payment
