Plastic Bearings for Automotive Applications

The manufacturing industry has witnessed the rise of plain plastic bearings during the last 20 years. Recently, the prevalence of plastic bearings in the automotive industry has also been on the rise. To succeed in automotive applications, plain bearings must have high wear resistance, require minimum maintenance and provide thermal stability. Igus plastic plain bearings possess these characteristics and can, in many cases, replace metal-backed PTFE bearings and roller bearings. There is hardly a vehicle, which doesn't have an iglidur plain bearing made of triboplastics as replacement for metallic plain and roller bearings. The applications range from simple uses in seat systems up to mechanically and thermally highly stressed applications in the engine compartment, for instance in shift fork for transmission or in exhaust systems for modern diesel engines.
