Indian's first International exhibition and conference on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering 2013 (HT & SE) concluded in Chennai recently. The three-day event was organised by ASM International - Chennai Chapter, covering Commercial Heat Treating Services, Ceramics, Heat Treat Process Controls & Instrumentation, Heat Processing Atmosphere & Generators and Heat Processing Compounds & Solutions.

According to ASM, growth of the heat treatment market in Asia was phenomenal in the recent past. India has come a long way leading the table with more than a million dollar business every year and growing at a rate of 12 per cent per annum. Heat Treatment being a critical manufacturing technology in nearly every industrial Market sector including automotive, off-highway, railway, defense, aerospace and nuclear, has high potential with huge market. The presence of Suzuki, Hyundai Volkswagen, Dailmer, Renault Nissan, Peaugeot, MAN, Caterpillar, Terex and John Deere has encouraged more and more investment in India. This has necessitated large investment in heat treatment both at captive and with outsourced heat treaters.

Parallel with this growth, the technology of heat treatment is continuously upgrading itself with the development of tailored microstructures with exceptional properties at nano Scale. Advent of thermo mechanical processing, nano biotitic steels are only a few glimpses of such an expertise. This has also triggered the need for improved processing chemicals, precise process controls, automation, up gradation of testing and measuring Instruments.

Surface engineering has emerged today as a frontier technology in various industrial sectors like power, automobile, chemical, marine, oil & refinery, aerospace etc. owing to the attractive properties offered through coatings and surface modification. "Beauty is skin deep" as people say, one can enhance the quality and property of the surfaces with desired composition, strength, grain size, porosity, corrosion resistance, catalyst etc. by using both Conventional and Advanced Surface Engineering Technologies.

During the seminars, topics like conventional techniques for surface engineering, electro deposition to painting, cementing, weld overlaying and spraying where discussed. India has mastered the Art of surface modification technologies over several centuries back. In India the TIFAC under the Ministry of Science and Technology has come out with a report on the importance of surface engineering in various industries with a roadmap for implementation, and also facilitating the transfer of technologies. As a result of initiatives taken by TIFAC several Industries have taken lead in setting up new projects in surface engineering, like development of diamond like coatings using PVD, coatings by D-Gun, titanium nitride coating by PVD Plasma coating of ceramics on hydro-turbine components.

The event was attended by more than 4000 key trade visitors and 70 high profile exhibitors participated in the show. The event also saw that the attendees communicated with the leading industry professionals and gathered first hand information of heat treat and surface engineering products and services. Many participants and visitors felt that HT & SE 2013 was an ideal place to find new business avenues, agents, and partners.
